“Yoga—Shmoga!” How does meditation relate?
A friend once said that to me while explaining her preference for Pilates. I laughed, unoffended, because I knew that anyone who says that, simply doesn’t understand the depth of Yoga when practiced fully.
If you’ve taken a class with me, you probably know that Yoga is much more than physical movement. In fact, there are Eight Limbs of Yoga, and asana—the physical practice—is just one of them, and it is most often what draws people in. But there’s so much more to explore!
What about those other limbs, like focus and concentration, contemplation, or meditation? Especially Meditation! It’s very popular these days.
Are you an experienced meditator, someone who has never tried it, or maybe like me—someone who started and stopped, struggling to find inspiration or consistency?
My journey with meditation—one that was, for many years, unsuccessful– has now become the cornerstone of my day. I can honestly say I can’t imagine my life without meditation. It has profoundly changed me in ways I never expected. And yet, I didn’t fully commit to it until one of the most challenging experiences of my life forced me to reconsider. (more of that story later).
The ways to meditate vary wildly. I have experimented with many over the years and have finally found a method that works for me.
For example, sometimes I use quotes or mantras to help me settle into my daily 15–17 minute meditation. The following is an adaptation of a quote from Esther/Abraham Hicks.
“I sit in meditation to quiet my mind, with the deliberate intention of releasing resistance, so I can raise my vibration to my greatest awareness of what my inner being knows about my vortex.”
