“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
Howard Thurman, Theologian, Philosopher, Civil Rights leader.
So what makes you come alive?
What lights you up from the inside out? What reminds you that this is a beautiful world filled with moments to feel joy?
More than ever before, this question feels essential. Why? Because in times of uncertainty, discord, and strife, it becomes even more important to find what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Joy as Defiance
Recently, I was sharing with someone I deeply respect how I’ve been feeling about the state of our world. She listened, nodded and then gently said something I’ll never forget:
“This is your act of defiance.”
In a world that seems intent on spreading fear, boldly choosing to be a seeker of beauty, joy and well-being can itself be an act of resistance. A powerful one.
Your Turn
So I ask you again: Are there things you love doing – things that pull you back to yourself?
Are there places or memories that make you smile, without effort?
Are there everyday moments that feel deeply right, even in their simplicity?
When you deliberately and consciously turn your thoughts toward well-being, you are engaging in an act of power! You are choosing presence, creating a new internal template that can shape your day and your life.
Rodgers and Hammerstein Were Onto Something
They wrote a whole song about this: “My Favorite Things”. And honestly? They were right.
Tuning into what brings you joy isn’t just charming, it’s scientifically sound.
Research shows that remembering, naming, and savoring your “favorite things” helps the body release feel-good chemicals. These support emotional resilience, physical well-being and a sense of grounded connection.
And when you feel that, you bring it with you into the world.
Your Light Matters
You contribute your well-beingness – your steadiness, your light – to your corner of the planet. That presence, that vibrational countenance, helps soften the sharp edges of collective angst.
So let this be a gentle call to remember what makes you come alive.
And go do it.
With love and aliveness, Patty
