A Surprising Trio: Overwhelm, Horses and Mr. Rogers

A Surprising Trio: Overwhelm, Horses and Mr. Rogers

What to write? What to write? There are so many ideas I want to share with you, and gathering all the possibilities can be overwhelming. So what to do? Just start somewhere, anywhere, and look for the try (more about that in a moment).

I love horses, and although I’m not riding much these days, I take great pleasure in watching videos of master horseman Ryan Rose. His way of working with horses and their humans, is deeply inspired, and so applicable to us! Three things stand out for me:

1. His commitment to getting into the minds of both. He takes the time to understand the nature and personality of each.
2. His emphasis on recognizing the try. He notices and rewards effort, not perfection.
3. His gift for seeing context. He shows that when we understand perspective, we can step back, breathe, and see the bigger picture, which gives us more options.

These are lessons that apply beautifully to our human lives.

That loved one who always says “no” to new ideas? Maybe they’re not being difficult, maybe they’re overwhelmed or anxious.

The friend who’s perpetually late? Perhaps they’re caught in the loop of doinginstead of being, measuring worth by productivity instead of peace.

And what about you, are you a pusher? The kind who can’t step away from the computer or the to-do list until you’re completely drained?

Which brings me to Mr. Rogers, another quiet master of gentleness. One of my favorite stories to share in yoga class is the one he often told about his mother’s advice:

“When I was a boy and would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'”

In a world that feels loud, fast, and full of overwhelm, that guidance is still everything:

Recognize the try.
Look for the helpers.
Pause.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is pause.

PAUSE
P – Possible
A – Alternative
U – Unexpected
S – Solutions (may)
E – Emerge

This November, as the holidays are getting closer, let’s practice the pause more often, recognize and reward the try and look for the helpers!

Much love, Patty
